A Home for Heritage Establishments

OUR MISSION

The Heritage Business Foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the advancement of heritage through the supporting, networking, and promoting of heritage establishments, as well as the documenting, preserving, and disseminating of heritage material for research, education, and posterity.

The Heritage Business Foundation was born out of the idea that the convergence of traditions and modernity can unlock a more inviting world for heritage establishments.

Our story began in 2019, from a chance encounter with a traditional bakery that had opened for business well over half a century ago. This homegrown bakery had preserved their authentic flavours and tradecraft, and had won the hearts of many generations before – despite the uphill battle faced by traditional industries. Preserving our culinary heritage had become increasingly difficult over the decades, and hundreds of the bakery’s peers did not survive due to challenges such as dwindling sales, higher rent, and lack of succession. We endeavoured to help them avoid the same fate.

As we forged ahead together to write a new chapter in their story, we met more businesses just like them: precious repositories of our heritage enduring into modern times. And so the Heritage Business Foundation was created to be a home for these heritage establishments – to ensure their continued longevity, and to preserve their heritage for posterity.

OUR IDENTITY
"The identity of the Heritage Business Foundation tells a tale of the past that we continue to inherit today and want to conserve tomorrow. It is an expression of our history and cultural heritage, weaved with modern techniques to create a forward-looking visual identity that is yet deeply-rooted in its heritage."
Eunice Foong, Founder of The Design Bureau
OUR LOGO
The logo draws inspiration from the early shophouses in the 1840s - 1900s. Historically, shophouses served as a home and a place of business. Merchants and craftsmen would conduct their businesses outside their front door, along the five-foot way. The logo, a modern interpretation of the front of the shophouse, symbolically represents this piece of history and is an emblem to welcome auspiciousness for the heritage businesses.

OUR BRAND ICONS
The brand icons comprise of the tiles that make the iconic five-foot way – an important architectural element that was introduced by Sir Stamford Raffles as part of the Ordinances of 4 November 1822. The five-foot way is unlike any ordinary walkway; it is a treasury of stories documenting the hustle and bustle of life in the past, and is an embodiment of the tears and sweat of the merchants and craftsmen.

The Heritage Business Foundation’s logo and brand identity, designed in collaboration with The Design Bureau, was conferred the Gold Award by the International Awards Associate in the MUSE Creative Awards 2022.
